Two of my co-workers (Megan & Derek) moved in right next to us last night. We helped them move their stuff in (guys, you got to throw some of those books away
, and then we sat around and talked for a couple of hours. Derek, who’s an absolute genius, started telling us about a project he built when he was 19. Get this: He built a sensory deprivation chamber! It’s this huge coffin-like thing, which was made from wood. The interior was coated with rubber insulation (the type that goes in water beds), it was filled with water, 800lbs of Epsom salt, and was heated to keep the water a cozy 96 degrees. So it didn’t get to nasty in there, it also had a ventilation and filtration system.
He said he would spend hours in there sometimes, and said that it really opened up his psyche; giving him a chance to confront suppressed and repressed psychological ‘stuff,’ as well as establish a witnessing awareness. He also had a monitor hooked up to the tank, so he could memorize things for class in a more efficient way! He found some pictures of it and we nearly died laughing, cause who in the world builds a personal sensory deprivation chamber??? Well, I suppose Derek does. Oh yeah, it was in his dorm room… Could you imagine being his roommate? That would be so fucking cool!!! Maybe some other time I’ll tell you about his ion propulsion levitation device….
