Noble Silence = ???

Ryan, my blogging homedawg, was sharing some of his experiences concerning the Tibetan retreats he has been on… They seemed to match up with our experience this weekend:

I’ll briefly tell you about one of my experiences. Aimee’ and I went to a center that had just started offering residential retreats over a weekend when a teacher was in town. We ended up leaving the next day because everyone their was talking and hanging out like it was a party! (We did go back for teachings, but that was it). Even though there was a sign up for “Noble Silence” there was anything but silence. The whole vibe did not feel contemplative. – [Integral Awakening]

I’d love to examine this a little further, as I’ve been considering how human values play into the way a contemplative practice is taught, as well as the way it’s interpreted & practiced…
